Our Stay-At-Home Movie Night this week will be BLACK PANTHERS directed by Agnes Varda, which is available for FREE through Criterion. This 30 minute film gives an incredible local snapshot of the Black Panther Party as it existed at the time of the 1968 filming, and gives a slice of historical perspective to the current struggle of black people against the American judicial system. Please join us on Saturday night at 7:30.
We will be moderating a CHAT ROOM during the movie. It is always of the utmost importance that we be respectful during these chat room sessions, but at this time it is even more so. We welcome a healthy dialogue.
We are returning to our POPCORN POP-UP this Saturday from 4 to 7pm at the Balboa. We are happy to report that all people working have had Covid-19 tests and have come back negative. It will be great to see you all again!
Agnès Varda turns her camera on an Oakland demonstration against the imprisonment of activist and Black Panthers cofounder Huey P. Newton. In addition to evincing Varda’s fascination with her adopted surroundings and her empathy, this perceptive short is also a powerful political statement.
