MOViES FOR MANiACS Presents a triple bill of "B-Movies with A-Ideas"

  • Balboa Theater 3630 Balboa Street San Francisco, CA, 94121 United States (map)

This pre-Halloween weekend celebration is a tribute evening to "B-Movies with A-Ideas". All three movies celebrate the magic of filmmaking, no matter what the budget is, as well as the importance of reaching for your Hollywood dreams. Hollywood 90028 is a brand new 4K restoration of a truly dazzling forgotten gem from 1973 and a major inspiration for Ti West's X, PEARL, MAXXXiNE trilogy. Audiences can watch one, two or all three movies for the same price along with being showered with prizes, trivia and special treats including a brand new Maniacal Mask created just for the event.

 (Ti West, 2022) @ 6:30PM

We kick off the evening with Ti West's thought-full exploitation flick. This recent A24 horror hit, single handedly lays out our evening's theme of B-Movies deserving to be celebrated as Art with a capital A. Showcasing a stunning cast consisting of Jenny Ortega, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi), Brittany Snow and Horror Cinema's newest Scream Queen, Mia Goth. With countless homages to 1970s Horror cinema combined with a stunning exploration of sexual repression/empowerment help this "gritty little ditty" earn its cult-classic status by getting better every time one watches it. It's also the perfect gateway drug for self-proclaimed Horror-film "scaredy-cats" to start with. Running Time: 106 minutes. NOTE: Rated R for strong bloody violence and gore, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and language. 4K DCP courtesy of A24 Films.

-Pearl (Ti West, 2022) @ 8:30PM

Filmed secretly alongside and released by A24 (just a few months after), Pearl is quite simply one of the best Horror films of the decade. Set at the end of WWI in 1918, director Ti West and star Mia Goth combined forces when writing this immensely layered and heart-wrenching prequel, while Mia Goth is absolutely mesmerizing as a young farmer's daughter with hopes and dreams of leaving home. With haunting cinematography akin to the Depression-era Technicolor films of the 1930s, such as Victor Fleming’s The Wizard of Oz (1939) along with subversive allusions to Silent movie masterpieces like Frances Marion & Victor Sjöström’s The Wind (1928), get yourself out of the house and into the Balboa Theater to understand why Pearl is an entire staircase above most other modern Horror movies. Running Time: 102 minutes. NOTE: Rated R for strong violence, gore, strong sexual content and graphic nudity. 4K DCP courtesy of A24 Films.

HOLLYWOOD 90028 (Christina Hornisher, 1973) @ 10:30PM

Our evening concludes with a brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negatives of one of the most exciting forgotten exploitation films of the 1970s. Rescued from obscurity by Grindhouse Releasing, HOLLYWOOD 90028 is an absolute revelation by writer/director Christina Hornisher as it follows a young photographer who has travelled to Hollywood hoping to make it as a cameraman in the movie business. Christopher Augustine's otherly-world performance as a delusionally frustrated filmmaker stuck in the adult film industry is truly one for the history books.

Channeling Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960) and underscored by an early soundtrack composed by Paul Verhoeven's favorite musician Basil Poledouris, come find out for yourself why contemporary female filmmakers Arkasha Stevenson (The First Omen), Anna Biller (The Love Witch) and Ti West (X, Pearl, Maxxxine) have spoken at great length about the importance of this rediscovered gem. NOTE: A special treat will be given to all audience members who achieve watching all three movies, not to mention experiencing the final shot, that has stunned critics, filmmakers, and audiences, all around the world. Running Time: 76 minutes. NOTE: Rated R for strong violence, gore, strong sexual content and graphic nudity. 4K DCP courtesy of Grindhouse Releasing.
